The initial spread

30 of South Korea’s first 36 MERS cases are patients, health workers or visitors who came into contact with the index patient while he spent time in three medical centres after a trip to the Middle East.

The further six cases involved tertiary infections and were contracted from two other patients.

After this, not all cases can be traced back to individuals, but spread from the hospitals where infected patients were transferred.
