Israel launched "Operation Protective Edge" on July 8 in response to Hamas launching rockets into Israel. The conflict has left over 1,700 dead and much of Gaza City damaged from heavy shelling by Israeli forces.

Assessing the damage
UNITAR compared satellite images collected July 25 with pre-crisis images collected July 6 to determine the level of damage in three areas targeted by the Israeli offensive against Hamas. This is a preliminary analysis that has not yet been validated in the field.
Northern Gaza
Many damaged buildings are outside of the evacuation zone, including a refugee camp and an elementary school which was hit by shelling, killing at least 15 of the 3,300 Palestinians sheltering inside.
